I fell victim to a scary new phone scam

بازدید: 5 بازدید

Las Vegas is 10 hours behind Cyprus. When it is midnight in Cyprus, it is 2 PM the previous day in Las Vegas. Maddeningly, this left me no direct, digital path that might lead me to the thief. By this point I was convinced it was the cab driver. This is what I think happened: in a booze-addled stroke of genius, I had jumped into a non-app, unmarked street cab. But the driver did take me home. It could have been anyone’s car – I was too drunk and exhausted to care.

I then saw evidence on my email that an Uber had been summoned to my doorstep just after I had gone to bed, when I was comatose. That’s why they were refusing to reimburse me. The purchases had been made through my banking app, using my Face ID or password. But the bank thought otherwise. The nature of the incident, they explained, left no room for doubt: it could only have been me who spent all that money in those insomniac supermarkets and casinos. Stealing a Sim card wasn’t enough, they insisted.

Weeks later, I was stuffing a jumble of accumulated spreadsheets, maps and bank letters into my rucksack. Jumping on my bike, I set off towards Wembley, following digital breadcrumbs, clinging to some dim hope of reclaiming my money from the ghost who stole it. As the bank stonewalled, I had no choice but to turn detective on the trail of my missing Sim card. I continued, because either they didn’t know, which would be a serious oversight for a fraud department, or they did know, and they were withholding the smoking gun, the proof of my innocence.

I asked point-blank if they knew another customer had their money stolen at Silvertime. Armed with this information, I made one last call to my bank’s fraud department. The irregularity of the purchases made it clear, at least to me, this was the work of a criminal. Nothing pumps the adrenaline like a call with a bank representative bearing bad news. I’d be reimbursed by lunchtime, surely. As he rattled off the litany of pre-dawn supermarket and casino charges, my horror gave way to a begrudging sense of awe: how had a criminal managed to spend five grand (all my money) in under half an hour at 5am?

The thief then went on a similar spree – and her gym is less than a mile from my flat. It could have been over, but then I read in a national newspaper a story about a woman who had her phone and bank card stolen out of her gym locker. I publicly reached out to her on X, my post gained traction, and soon a journalist contacted me. In 1991 at Sears Point, Ricky Rudd spun leader Davey Allison nearing the white flag, and NASCAR stripped Rudd of the win by showing him the black flag and giving the checkers to Allison when they came back around the road course.
